Spotlight on SUNY Press: Journal of Japanese Philosophy and Journal of Buddhist Philosophy

Since 1966, the State University of New York (SUNY) has operated a publishing house, SUNY Press, to, in their words, “support (the university’s) commitments to teaching, research, and public service.” SUNY Press has drawn international acclaim for publishing distinguished research, putting over 150 titles to print per year and maintaining a backlist of over 6,000 titles. Administered by the SUNY Research Foundation, SUNY Press values vigorous peer review and leverages the deep expertise and strong reputation of the faculty with the SUNY system who serve as its Editorial Board. Its list of titles continues to grow rapidly, particularly in the humanities and social sciences.

Krummel, Assistant Editor, and with The Journal of Buddhist Philosophy’s Editor-in-Chief Jay L. Garfield about these vital journals.

The Journal of Buddhist Philosophy

Religion professor Gereon Kopf observed that scholarship covering Buddhist philosophy tended to be scattered among a wide variety of different journals, often aimed at different audiences and that there was no unified place in the scholarly landscape where articles and reviews could be found on the subject, even as interest in Buddhist philosophy grew rapidly in the early 21^st century. With that in mind, he founded the Journal of Buddhist Philosophy, which published its first issue in 2015. Editor-in-Chief Garfield states, “It has made Buddhist philosophy more visible as a specialty in Buddhist Studies and Philosophy. It has provided a venue for papers central to our discipline that might seem to be fringe in philosophy as a whole or in Buddhist Studies as a whole.” The journal provides top-quality papers in Buddhist studies covering all traditions within the faith. The journal employs blind peer review to ensure this quality, with occasional guest editors covering special edition issues on specific topics. It is also one of very few journals that employs an Associate Editor for Diversity and Inclusion. The Journal of Buddhist Philosophy is indexed in Atla Religion Database^® and is available in full text in Atlas PLUS^®.

The Journal of Japanese Philosophy

In 2011, an international team of scholars, including Kevin Lam and Ching-yuen Cheung of Hong Kong, Mayuko Uehara of Japan, and John Krummel and Curtis Rigsby of the United States, joined together to create the first international periodical to specialize in Japanese philosophy. The first issue of this periodical, The Journal of Japanese Philosophy, was published in 2013, after which the editorial team was expanded to include Leah Kalmanson of the United States and Anton Sevilla of the Philippines. In the words of the editors, the journal’s purpose is “to provide a platform that can inform and enhance research in Japanese philosophy in the English language by publishing papers on Japanese philosophy from all time periods and diverse areas, including classical, medieval, modern, and contemporary Japanese philosophy, as well as interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, and comparative studies involving Japanese philosophy,” As the first international English-language journal in this subject published by a major academic publisher, it has contributed immensely to spreading knowledge about Japanese philosophy and awareness of how it contributes to the world of philosophy as a whole. Submissions are solicited to noteworthy and prestigious scholars in the field and unsolicited works are also accepted, and the journal publishes scholarship in a variety of styles and approaches to philosophy as well as related disciplines like intellectual history, religious studies, social theory, cultural theory, political science, and others. All submissions are put through a blind peer review process. The Journal of Japanese Philosophy is indexed in Atla Religion Database and is available in full text in Atlas PLUS.
