During the past several years, Atla’s editorial team has added over sixty new titles covering a range of Judaica studies to the Atla Religion Database®. The field of religion and theology not only encompasses the history and doctrines of the world’s religions but also the cultures those religions are a part of, including the work, art, literature, philosophy, and other aspects of the daily life of their practitioners. Looking at the titles related to Judaism in Atla’s research tools, you will find examinations of Jewish cultures throughout the entire world that show the vastness in variety of the Jewish experience and the wealth of contributions that Jews have made to world culture.

- Jewish Film & New Media, published by Wayne State University Press, provides an outlet for research into any aspect of Jewish film, television, and new media and is unique in its interdisciplinary nature, exploring the rich and diverse cultural heritage across the globe. The journal is distinctive in bringing together a range of cinemas, televisions, films, programs, and other digital material in one volume and in its positioning of the discussions within a range of contexts — the cultural, historical, textual, and many others.
- Southern Jewish History: Journal of the Southern Jewish Historical Society¸ published by The Southern Jewish Historical Society, is an annual peer-reviewed journal that publishes scholarly articles that reflect original research, creative methodologies and interpretations, and historiography related to the Southern Jewish experience.
- Western States Jewish History, published by Western States Jewish History Association, is the multidisciplinary journal of the Western States Jewish History Association, an organization dedicated to the discovery, collection, and dissemination of items and information pertaining to the Jewish experience in the American West. The geographic region includes states west of the Mississippi, as well as Western Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, and the Pacific Rim.
- Shofar: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Jewish Studies, published by Purdue University Press, publishes original, scholarly work and reviews a range of recent books in Judaica. Shofar has been published quarterly since 1981 and is served by a distinguished, international editorial board. Eligible submissions undergo a rigorous, double-blind peer review process.
- Jahrbuch des Dubnow-Instituts/Dubnow Institute Yearbook, published by the Leibniz-Institut für jüdische Geschichte und Kultur–Simon Dubnow, Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, is a bilingual publication that addresses an international German- and English-speaking scholarly public. Topics include contributions on the life and work of Jewish scholars, essays presenting new research projects and approaches to Jewish history and culture, and material on the life, work and thought of Simon Dubnow.
- Studies in Judaism, Humanities, and the Social Sciences, published by De Gruyter, is an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed academic journal. The mission of the journal is to publish original works of interest on Judaism through the “eyes” of the humanities and the social sciences. Its goal is to advance the systematic, scholarly, and social scientific study of Jews and Judaism, and to provide a forum for the discussion of methodologies, theories, and conceptual approaches across the many disciplines.
- Images: A Journal of Jewish Art and Visual Culture, published by Brill, invites scholarly articles on Jewish art and visual culture, ranging in time from Greco-Roman antiquity to the present day. Articles may concentrate on any geographical area in which Jewish participation had an impact, and any discipline, including architecture, painting, sculpture, treasury arts, book arts, graphics, textiles, photography, and film.
- Verapo Yerape: Journal of Torah and Medicine of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Synagogue and the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, published by Yeshiva University, is a journal dedicated to the interface between Jewish law (Halakhah) and science/medicine. It is published annually and contains articles on both classic and current topics relating to Jewish Medical Ethics and Medical Halakhah.
- Aschkenas: Zeitschrift für Geschichte und Kultur der Juden, published by De Gruyter, concentrates on the history and culture of the Ashkenazic Jews (those living in Central and Western Europe as well as Northern Italy), from the time when Ashkenazic Jewish culture was gradually forming in late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages up to the emancipation of the Jews in the 19th century. It also includes articles dealing with issues outside this period of time and geographical area. Aschkenas publishes essays, source editions, literature and research reports as well as reviews of current new publications.
- Ḥakirah: The Flatbush Journal of Jewish Law and Thought, published by Ḥakira, Inc., has made it its purpose to promote the intellectual and spiritual growth of the Jewish community. To accomplish this, Hakirah provides an opportunity for members of our community who have been studying in depth to disseminate the results of their study for careful review, encourage others to join in this type of study. It creates a forum for the discussion of issues of hashkafah and Halakhah relevant to the community from a perspective of careful analysis of the primary Torah sources.
- Naharaim: Journal of German-Jewish Literature and Cultural History, published by published by De Gruyter, presents the latest research on philosophical, literary and historical aspects of German-Jewish culture. The articles appear in both German and English. The journal presents biographical portraits and research on the intellectual history of German-speaking Jewry.
- Nashim: A Journal of Jewish Women’s Studies & Gender Issues, published by Indiana University Press for Hadassah-Brandeis Institute and Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies, provides an international, interdisciplinary, and scholarly forum in Jewish women’s and gender studies, and is the only one of its kind. It creates communication channels within the Jewish women’s and gender studies community and brings forth that community’s work to a wider audience.
- Cadernos de Estudos Sefarditas, published by Cátedra de Estudos Sefarditas Alberto Benveniste is a biannual peer-reviewed journal. The editors invite authors to submit original research articles, which have not been previously published in other journal or book, concerning Sephardic studies, Iberian conversos history and Sephardic diaspora.
Titles added to the index support Atla’s ongoing efforts to increase our full-text coverage. We currently offer full text for over forty titles that support the study of Judaica.

- Zutot: Perspectives on Jewish Culture, published by Brill, aims to fill a gap that has become more and more conspicuous among the wealth of scholarly periodicals in the field of Jewish Studies. The Zutot serves as a platform for small but incisive contributions and provides them with a distinct context. It covers Jewish culture in its broadest sense, i.e. encompassing various academic disciplines — literature, languages and linguistics, philosophy, art, sociology, politics, and history and reflects binary oppositions such as religious and secular, high and low, written and oral, male and female culture.

- The Jewish Quarterly Review, published by University of Pennsylvania, is the oldest English-language journal in the field of Jewish studies. JQR preserves the attention to textual detail so characteristic of the journal’s early years, while encouraging scholarship in a wide range of fields and time periods. In each quarterly issue of JQR the ancient stands alongside the modern, the historical alongside the literary, the textual alongside the contextual.
- Journal of Jewish Thought and Philosophy, published by Brill, aims to provide an international forum for Jewish thought, philosophy, and intellectual history from any given period. The emphasis is on high scholarly standards with an interest in issues of interpretation and the contemporary world. Articles are expected to cover philosophy, biblical studies, mysticism, literary criticism, political theory, sociology, and anthropology.
- European Journal of Jewish Studies, published by Brill, presents high-quality research articles, essays and shorter contributions on all aspects of Jewish Studies. Submissions are all double blind peer-reviewed. Additionally, EJJS seeks to inform its readers on current developments in Jewish Studies: it carries comprehensive review-essays on specific topics, trends and debated questions, as well as regular book-reviews.
- Holocaust and Genocide Studies, published by Oxford University Press, is an international journal featuring research articles, interpretive essays, book reviews, a comprehensive bibliography of recently published relevant works in the social sciences and humanities, and an annual list of major research centers specializing in Holocaust studies. Articles compel readers to: confront many aspects of human behavior, contemplate major moral issues, consider the role of sciences and technology in human affairs, and reconsider important features of political and social organization.
- Contemporary Jewry, published by Springer, is the only scholarly journal that focuses primarily on the social scientific study of Jewry. It encompasses a variety of social science disciplines, including anthropology, demography, economics, education, ethnography, history, politics, population, social psychology, and sociology. It highlights particular themes in special issues such as Jewish demography, Jewish music, Jews in Canada, and research narratives.
